Wittmann

A (bio)dynamic Family Estate in Germany's Rheinhessen Region

The Wittmann family has been growing grapes and producing wine in the small Rheinhessen village of Westhofen since 1663. Today, the estate cultivates 62 acres of vines in the rolling limestone hills found in the southern part of the region, just west of the Rhine river valley. They have been pioneers in developing the full-bodied, well-balanced style of dry wines for which the region has become known. And they were early adopters of organic (1990) and biodynamic (2004) viticulture.

Riesling is the dominant grape variety, accounting for 65% of the estate’s vineyard area. They also produce the three Pinot varieties (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir), as well as Silvaner. In addition, small quantities of Scheurebe, Chardonnay and some minor varieties are grown.

The estate has as its foundation the pursuit of balanced wines that have tension, depth and intensity, but at the same time fresh and elegant. Philipp Wittmann looks for natural balance in the vineyards, in order to slow the ripening process and harvest grapes that have fully developed flavors, but are not overripe. The Wittmann family has developed a deep bond with the land they cultivate. This respect for nature and commitment to quality earned Philipp Germany’s Winemaker of the Year 2014.

100 Hills Wines

Wittmann 100 Hills Pinot Blanc

Wittmann 100 Hills Pinot Blanc

A lively and beautifully structured white wine from organic vineyards in the rolling hills of the Rheinhessen region.

Elegant, with fine aromas of ripe fruit, basil and mint. Creamy and fresh with vibrant acidity and a fine minerality. Invigorating freshness of ripe fruits and nuts. An everyday wine; pairs well with all foods.

The entry-level “100 Hills” wines are produced from about 40% estate-harvested fruit, with the remainder sourced from other local growers who are certified organic by the European Union. The fruit is harvested by hand, fermented naturally and matured in 50% stainless steel tanks and 50% large, neutral wooden casks. This combination retains the lively, bright fruit while bringing an extra dimension of texture from maturation in wood. It’s an elegant and invigorating wine that’s excellent for everyday enjoyment.

Estate Wines

Wittmann Estate Riesling Trocken

Wittmann Estate Riesling Trocken

A beautifully proportioned dry Riesling from the leader of Biodynamic viticulture in Germany’s Rheinhessen region.

The Wittmann Estate Riesling Trocken is harvested by hand from estate-owned vineyards around the village of Westhofen. It is fermented with native yeasts and matured in large, neutral oak casks. The wine shows a deep, stony aroma, with an elegant structure and bright citrus juice that leads to a lingering, piquant finish.

Wittmann Westhofener Riesling Trocken – Aus Ersten Lagen

Wittmann Westhofener Riesling Trocken – Aus Ersten Lagen

A stunning and complex “premier cru” dry Riesling that was selected from two grand cru (Grosse Lage) vineyard sites.

A stunning and complex “premier cru” dry Riesling, the Westhofener Riesling bears the new VDP Rheinhessen designation, “Aus Ersten Lagen,” which simply means “from premier cru vineyards.” This is analogous to the Burgundian use of “Premier Cru,” without vineyard designation, when the wine is a blend of two or more climats. These wines may also contain declassified fruit from grand cru sites, however, which is exactly the case with the Westhofener. This wine was selected from maturing parcels (15 years or older) in the Morstein and Brunnenhäuschen vineyards, both of which are classified as Grosse Lage. Rich in mineral tones, this wine shows the great potential of these top sites.

Wittmann Aulerde Riesling GG

Wittmann Aulerde Riesling GG

A dark and brooding dry Riesling from the warm heart of the Grosse Lage (grand cru) Aulerde vineyard in Westhofen.

First documented in 1380, the Aulerde site lies at the foot of the protective slopes of the Kirchspiel vineyard, and it is the estate’s warmest site. The topsoil is mostly a deep layer of loess, but in a small portion of Aulerde there is a heavy clayish marl with only a small amount of limestone. It is only in this parcel that Riesling is grown in the Aulerde vineyard.

Wittmann Brunnenhäuschen Riesling GG

Wittmann Brunnenhäuschen Riesling GG

An elegantly cool and complex dry Riesling from an exceptional Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard in the Rheinhessen region.

This site is high on the slope above the village of Westhofen. Due to its elevation, grapes ripen slowly here, allowing for a very long growing season. The finest portion of Brunnenhäuschen is an old parcel known as “Abtserde,” where Wittmann has 1.2 acres of Riesling. This site has a clayish marl that is rich in limestone. Due to a high iron oxide content, parts of the soil are reddish in color, also referred to as “terra rossa.” The subsoil is interspersed with large limestone rocks.

Wittmann Kirchspiel Riesling GG

Wittmann Kirchspiel Riesling GG

A powerful but finely structured dry Riesling from a superb Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard in the Rheinhessen region.

The Kirchspiel vineyard opens up like an amphitheatre toward the Rhine and receives the sun’s first rays in the morning. Here the vines, with their east to southeast exposure, are sheltered from the cold west winds; this provides the Kirchspiel with a choice microclimate. Our vineyards here are planted mainly in the upper portion of the site, with a gradient of up to thirty per cent.

Wittmann Morstein Riesling GG

Wittmann Morstein Riesling GG

A monumental dry Riesling from the greatest Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard in the southern Rheinhessen region.

The Morstein vineyard is situated on a south-facing slope that ascends from the glacial valley of the Rhine to the rim of a high plateau, reaching a height of 280 meters (920 ft.) above sea level at an inclination of 20 percent. The vines for the Morstein Rieslings lie in a choice, five-hectare (12.3-acre) parcel of the site. Grosses Gewächs (GG) is the term for an estate’s best dry wine from a classified vineyard.

Wittmann Morstein Riesling Kabinett

Wittmann Morstein Riesling Kabinett

An impressive, balanced Kabinett from the greatest Grosse Lage (grand cru) vineyard in the southern Rheinhessen region.

The extraordinary Morstein vineyard is situated on a south-facing slope that ascends from the glacial valley of the Rhine to the rim of a high plateau, reaching a height of 280 meters (920ft) above sea level at an inclination of 20 percent. The VDP.Grosse Lage designation is awarded only to the finest vineyards. Wines grown here express a distinctive sense of place and promise tremendous cellarability.

Wittmann Estate Grauer Burgunder

Wittmann Estate Grauer Burgunder

The Wittmann estate wines introduce the elegance and sense of place for which this Rheinhessen estate is known. The Estate Grauer Burgunder is harvested exclusively from sites in the Rheinhessen village of Westhofen that have limestone soil. Fermented naturally in large, neutral oak casks, this is a richly creamy wine full of pear and nutty fruit flavors. Broad and round in texture, it retains elegant tautness that is the signature of this excellent estate.
